Andrássy út is an elegant avenue with cafés, luxury shops and exclusive restaurants. A great cultural walk from the city centre to Heroes’ square, on this avenue there is the Opera, Liszt Ferenc Square, fine theatres and museums, and some of the grandest villas in the city. It has been renamed five times, but still has its own individual charm! For this reason and for its architectural wonders it is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Situated in the newly-built Palace of Arts, the Museum of Contemporary Art has a great permanent collection and strong visiting shows: installations, photography and performances. From the museum there is a superb view of the river – this is the point where river cruise ships usually turn round. This is the building with the fancy, changing light show – check it out in the evening!

The Budapest ‘antique row’ – a street of antique dealers and contemporary galleries – is situated in a friendly city-centre street near the river Danube. It has a regular event called ‘Falk Art Forum’, in which galleries present music and wine, and give a warm welcome to even non-affluent visitors. The trend-setting galleries are: Kieselbach, Virág Judit, Pintér and Nagyházi. Just stroll along, buy some small souvenirs, or look for your own personal treasure. To find cut-price bargains go to Ecseri flea market or Petőfi Csarnok flea market at the weekends.

A must for lovers of Art Nouveau – a wonderful little three-level museum and café. It is privately-owned and operated. The owner can tell you the most authentic stories. A small shop in the gallery sells original and replica jewellery. Nearby there are a couple of other great Art Nouveau buildings, the Post Office Savings Bank and the former Stock Exchange – go and discover them.

This really is an ‘only in Budapest’ experience. You will feel like a grain of sand in the company of giant Communist-era statues. An open-air museum on the very outskirts of Budapest. Though not masterpieces, the works are definitely exciting. There are film screenings and a shop of amusing Communist souvenirs. You can get there by a special bus from Deák Square, by public transport or by taxi – the journey takes about twenty minutes.
